For some children, home education at five is simply a continuation of life as they already know it.  For others, the transition to being home educated is much more dramatic and difficult with exit from school precipitated by negative experiences that may take a long time to overcome.  The focus over this period is, rightly, on the children but for parents beginning home education, this is also an enormous life change and, more than that, a life changing experience.  This talk considers the journey of parents as they take on the challenges and responsibilities of home education – how does home education change parents and what does it mean for parents’ futures, identities and perspectives?  Drawing on research and personal experience, we explore parents’ transitions, the changes home education brings to parents’ lives and the opportunities that home ed affords to parents.
