It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1
On 21 May 2016, we held our 5th annual “Learn Free” Christian Home Educators Conference at the Queens Road Baptist Church in Coventry.
We were delighted to reach our highest attendance of almost 130 people, some of them travelling from as far as Newcastle, Southend-on-Sea, and Plymouth!
Resource providers in attendance were TEACH, Conquermaths, Tutors & Exams, Prim-Ed, 2Simple, Dimensions Curriculum, Christian Valley School Online, Abraham’s Seed, Amber’s LMP, and Answers in Genesis.
The entire day exceeded our expectations – there was a lot to smile about, as people appeared to have been encouraged from the very start.
The CHEW bakers surpassed themselves, with a wonderful array of delicious treats, everyone was
friendly and relaxed. Our exhibitors joked among themselves, and donated THE most generous prizes for our draw at the end of the day – from free GCSE exams, to free subscriptions, DVD’s, and discounts – some people went home richer than they’d arrived!
Josh and Holly Kindness set the tone, with their encouraging talk “A Road Less Travelled”, where they
shared openly about their home educating journey.
Our “What Next?” panel, did not exactly go as planned, but turned out to be a really good session, as the UCAS representative, Louise Evans, gave helpful and constructive advice, and Fiona Nicholson of Ed Yourself, encouraged with her experience. Although Wayne Gallear arrived late, he was still able to contribute meaningfully, and no doubt had many come and chat to him afterwards.
Many commented very positively about Alice Khimasia’s workshop on “Mentoring the Self-Directed Learner”(See our articles page for more on this).
John and Karen Blackburn’s excellent session on marriage was also well received.
Many people commented that the conference was “just what they needed” – and that is exactly what we always aspire to be! General comments about all the sessions were really positive – many thanks to Trish Rowell, Marygrace Mann, Nick Ireland, Rebecca Cole, Michaela Turpin, and Darren Male.
The brand new purple banner and purple t-shirts really looked good, especially since there were so many of them. Many thanks to Tutors and Exams for their sponsorship! We also thank Christian Home Education Support Service for their generous support of our conference, which makes it all possible!
